Ages ago – I think on this blog before it changed names – I introduced the concept of a Lame Cheer (not Lame Cheerleader – don’t be so mean). It’s that thing where you need someone to cheer you on to the fact that I Returned My Library Books Before I Got Fined! or I Actually Moved the Laundry from the Washer to the Dryer!
You know it’s not a big deal, it’s just a lame daily to do item….but you are proud of yourself for getting that food in the crock pot and being all prepared for dinner and not freaking out at 5:14 pm! And you are PROUD of the fact that you turned in that tax client prep sheet to the tax guy! And that picture! It only took TWO YEARS to hang it on the wall! You go, Glen Coco!!
It feels so lame to want cheers for those things. But sometimes doesn’t it just feel good to have your small accomplishments cheered for??
News You Already Knew News Flash: Life is hard and also really boringly monotonous (tip: if you call it quotidian it sounds much less boring because quotidian means “mundane” or “daily” but sounds so much cooler). So the quotidian life can suck you right down into a pile of melted strawberry milkshake. And the to do list can mock you like a mud puddle on a day you wore your new shoes. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT, MUD PUDDLE???
So what would make it better? Someone cheering for you of course.
Right now I have ONE project for school left. ONE. I cannot for the life of me get started on this project. Well, I named and saved a document with the right title – does that count??? I have been procrastinating.
Things I Do When I Procrastinate
1. Make lists of things I do when I procrastinate.
2. Read 800 page Stephen King novels (11/22/63 – I finished it!)
3. Thoroughly clean out my closet. (2 bags of old stuff out the door!)
4. Watch YouTube with my kids. (Nerdy Nummies anyone?)
5. Sit here and try to come up with a number 5 on my list…
I also have one final left for school. ONE. I need to study for it and start planning it. I don’t WANT to do it!!! So of course the right answer is to NOT start planning it, yes? It’s like a bad case of senioritis – and of course at my age going back to school, it almost literally is senior(citizen)itis… Blah. Who thought going to school was a good idea??? I take it back!!!
I’m reading Smarter Faster Better by Charles Duhigg (his book on habit forming is realllly good). He would say that I should pick one thing to do today on my project that makes me feel like I am in control and choosing to do the project. Because part of motivation is feeling that we are in control of the outcome.
Apparently I choose to write a blog post about how I’m procrastinating in order to feel I am controlling the outcome of my project. #logic #mydegreeisnotinMakingSense
I think I need some Lame Cheers to inspire me in getting through one more month…
Many of us have HUGE things we’re facing right now and I am not downplaying those at all.
But even in the midst of those things it’s the banalities of life that can bring out the frustration (ever notice you stay calm in the middle of the intense scene and then blow up at the grocery store’s lame way of deciding who’s next in the deli line??)
So here’s to Lame Cheers. Yay for you for doing those dishes! Yay for you for sending those monotonous emails… Yay for getting gas in your car before you got stranded on the side of the road!
Yay for…. what is it that seems quotidian to you today? What do you need a Lame Cheer for?
