There are certain ideas and things you pull out as a mother to keep your kids occupied.
This is one I hadn’t thought of. You take the Sunday paper ads and spend hours cutting out itty-bitty items for your pretend pet shop. You score big when there’s a PetSmart ad with lots of pictures of adorable animals. Then you can expand and make a Target. With shampoo and clothes and games and radios and everything anyone could ever want to shop for. The three kids spend tons of time doing this every week and our floor ends up horribly messy:
I make them keep their little treasures in a specific basket and they’re allowed to keep them as long as they don’t end up all over my house. But, really, I had never thought of that as something to keep them occupied. I have to take a deep breath and try not to mind the mess…we do clean it up when they’re done!
On the other hand, a dream and an idea I always had in mind for my kids is that they would do Legos! And, fortunately, Legos are right up 9 yo’s alley. The problem is there are not a lot of Legos for a girl – I mean, she’s not really into alien spaceship/shoot-em-up kinda things. But there is a series of Lego sets that people have designed online and Lego has produced them as sets (link to another option they have). They are very cool… very expensive, but worth it. She got this set for Christmas from her grandma and has spent HOURS up in her room getting it just right. She finally finished yesterday and I was so proud! (And look how cool the townhouse is! You can lift the different floors off and see inside the house to see the stairway. On the bottom floor is a little veggie grocery store. Very cool. Make more of these, Lego!!!)
